His farewell letter
Came today,
But you
Unknowing this
Took it to the window
For extra light
And unfolded slowly
Like one
Unwrapping
Some precious gift,
Read the lines
He’d written there.
You held the letter
A foot or so away;
Looked out
Of the window
To take your mind
From the letter’s hurt;
The words,
Scrawled across
The page,
All passion
For some foreign port;
Some new found love,
Some other girl
Whose features
He has named
And praised.
But you
He barely mentions,
Or asks
How you do;
How bares
Your heart and soul;
He knows only
Of his heart
And present state
Of soul;
Leaving you
Quite broken
With a heart
That’s not quite
Whole.

Ouch - something many women can relate to. Strong and passionate poetry that tells a sad story. Very nicely done and I enjoyed the read immensely.
