Sounding The Alarm

I snuck past enemy lines
When you weren't watching
Got so close to your bubble
That I could touch the heat
You swore you can not feel

I was a secret top-agent
A spy in a foreign land
Doing reconnaissance so I could
Find a way into your secret world

You didn't even notice I was there
Not until it was too late
And your heart had already
Felt things you told it not to
Never again, not after what happened last time

I pushed too far into the prison
You constructed for yourself
Built a life inside its walls
With you as my companion
Two lost souls
Together only because
You hadn't noticed you weren't alone

I told you I loved you

Something in you sounded the alarm
Like Rolfe calling the guards to Liesl
Arguments like gun fire rounds
Sounding around my head
I thought I was safe here
Happiness seemed so near
As long as I didn't get too close to it

Author notes

"Like Rolfe calling the guards to Liesl" - Rolfe and Liesl are that couple from the Sound of Music. They were in love, but when he became a Nazi and she was trying to escape, he blew his whistle and alerted the rest of the guards because his duty to his ideals was more than his love for her.

So sad. That someone can turn on the one they love, because they can't turn on their country. It's the bitterness and harshness that makes you want to cry. I like the way this makes me feel like it's about war without reading the AN.

This is an ingenious use of metaphor; I loved every minute of it. Keep writing!
