My Child

In your cot you so quietly nap
Lightly turning to and fro
And though not yet, you'll know in time
Your daddy loves you so

Your daddy has had some life
Like a yo yo up and down
But you keep daddy happy
You keep him on level ground

Your mum she too loves you
As much as she loves me
And though I thought it lost
I truly am happy

Hush baby stay asleep
As I hold your mum in my arms
As when you wake, I'll pick you up
Your head resting in my palm

Your mum she is so kind
She is beautiful, just like you
Although she may not say it
She very much loves you

Now sweet child you can read
And have the wisdom for my words
You're slowly finding life's beauties
And just how much it hurts

But as you face this bumpy life
Full of ups and downs
Your daddy will be hear for you
And keep you from the ground

My baby I love you so
And the surprising thing is this
For although I love you now
You are yet to even exist

I am but a young man
But I know this true
That one-day when you grab my hand
I'll know you love me too.

Author notes

Not really a children's poem per say, this is a poem I wrote to my child, which doesn't exist. There were many inspirational points for this, the birth of my nephew, the mis-carriage a close friend had, but mostly a story of a lady in the local paper that found a bunch of letters written to her by her (deceased) father when she was a child (for future reading).

  • I think you did a very good job writing this. I thought it was very sweet. My baby does exist, only in my belly right now... which is kind of awkward to say, because it's my first one. anyhow, You did a very wonderful job writing this! keep up your wonderful work, best of luck... thanks for the entry!

What a wonderful way to tell your children they love you... especially when you think of them with love before they are even in this world. Being a mother, I can appreciate the message here and think this is a wonderful poem.
