For the Children

Missing image
I saw a woman and she was crying.
Woman why are you weeping?
What makes you so terribly sad?

The children, the children
Who will feed the children?
They are hungry. They are starving.

I saw a woman and she was smiling.
Woman why are you smiling?
What makes you so terribly glad?

The children, the children.
There is hope for the children.
You are helping. You are giving.

I saw a woman and she was dying.
Woman why are you dying?
What makes you so terribly ill?

The children, the children.
I'd give my life for the children.
They are ill. They are dying.

I saw a woman and she was living.
Woman why in hearts do you live?
What makes your legacy live on?

The children, the children.
As long as you remember them
They will live and so will I.

Author notes

Audrey Hepburn devoted the later years of her life to help starving children as an ambassador for UNICEF. She used her popularity to raise awareness of the needs of children around the world. She ignored pain in her abdomen to make her final trip for UNICEF. When she returned she was diagnosed with Colon cancer. She died a few months later. Her son Sean Farrar has established the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund to continue to raise money and meet the needs for children.

A beautiful piece about a very admirable woman and thank you for sharing it with us. The simple structure aids this poem well as you alternate sorrow and hope and finish on a hope that transcends death.

also this poem gave me chills when i read it (the good kind, have you ever had those? i think they are pretty cool feeling)
    my favorite part is this

...Woman why in hearts do you live?
What makes your legacy live on?

and this ( they kinda go tohether)...

As long as you remember them
They will live and so will I.

that is the reason all christians should live. to live so that other ppl will have the chance to live.

Audrey Hepburn... what a saint. How many celebrities nowadays go so far out of their way to help others? Her kind, the kind with both money and a heart big enough for giving, is in all too short supply these days and you've captured the spirit of a true humanitarian very well. Keep up the good work

I LOVE AUDREY. Breakfast at Tiffany's is my favorite movie. But anyways, I did not know this about her. And it only makes me love her more!!! I wish I could travel to other countries and help. Now that I know of this Fund, if I ever am able to donate to a charity again, this is where it will go. Beautiful write again!
