An Everyday Hero

He didn't slay any dragons
He didn't rescue a princess to win her desire
He never rushed into a house that was on fire
He never saved a child
He never went to war
And he never died for his country.
He was an everyday hero.

He went to work everyday with a smile.
He did the best he could on his job every single day.
He solved the problems that came his way.
He held the respect of his bosses and his coworkers
He helped those he could.
And he gave credit where it was due.
He was an everyday hero.

He volunteered while he was single.
He gave time to his church and his community.
He reached out to children in need of more than pity.
He loved them, held them and played with them.
He taught them about the source of his love
And he mentored a boy in need of a man's ruthless love.
He was an everyday hero.

He married a wonderful woman.
He loved her the best he knew how.
He gave little notes and did little chores then and now.
He took her on dates and listened to her tales.
He gave her breaks when she needed them most.
And he said, "I love you" every single day.
He was an everyday hero.

He had one and only one precious son.
He taught him to catch and to throw.
He went to his games and cheered at his shows.
He stood proud and tall at his graduations.
He listen to his needs and passed on his wisdom.
And he let him go when it came his time to leave.
He was an everyday hero.

He had one and only one precious daughter.
He taught her to sing and to dance.
He went to her recitals whenever he had the chance.
He showed his pride in all of her successes.
He listen to her cares and passed on his wisdom.
And he gave her away when another won her heart.
He was an everyday hero.

He still gave of his time when he was old.
He had the respect of neighbors and friends.
Throughout his life, he gave his love and made many mends
To the hearts of family, strangers and friends.
When he died of a ripe old age they came in droves
To honor their hero, husband, dad and friend
He was an everyday hero.

No, he didn't slay any dragons.
He didn't rescue a princess to win her desire.
He never rushed into house that was on fire.
He never saved a child.
He never went to war.
And he never died for his country.
He was an everyday hero
Who changed his world.

Author notes

To me miracles are the ones we make everyday that often go unnoticed and seem ordinary but make all the difference to those we touch.

It was so beautiful...so beautiful indeed. I have to print this out and put it on my wall and another copy on my locker and ONE MORE in my planner. Again, I was wowed by your ablility to look deeper than the truth. It's a wonderful talent to have, and I wish I had it, too.

The first stanza was my favorite. It was a nice, full-cirlce ending. Beautiful as always...I'm so very pleased! *Claps*

This is no small miracle... how rare it is to see both an everyday hero, someone who does all the things you say (which you do so beautifully, I might add) and also gets thanked for it (which was thoughtful and heartfelt). I loved how it went through everything he did then came around full circle. Touching and well written.

A poem that really speaks the truth.
There are so many "everyday heros" who do not get recognized.
    Nice Job

This poem is nicely formed. Watch the repetition of some words in consecutive lines-- in my opinion, it would be more effective to mix it up a little. Good message, one very fitting for Father's Day. We should all appreciate the everyday heroes in our own lives.

::Claps. Continues clapping. Remains clapping. Annnnnnnd...stops.:: That brought a tear to my eye. It was really great. Kind of remains me of me in the present day, and it also reminds me of what I want to be when (and if) I get married and raise a family. It was really great and really inspirational. Keep writing.

This was really pretty. I enjoyed the way you showed the life of a good man. There are very few of those in the world. I'm lucky to know one of these men, a man who travels the world and always remains faithful to his wife. He's one of the few of a dying breed.

    good luck

ah yes. i agree with what they said. sometimes the little things are overlooked in a time of drama and flair. and those that quietly change things and make the world beautiful get overlooked. thanks for this entry

It is important to acknowledge the great heroes of our times - the brave police officers, soldier, fire fighters - but we must stop to praise people who live and die going beyond what is merely expected to do the things their morality and conscience tells them thye must do. I think of my father when I read this. Thanks

What a wonderful message and at a very appropriate time as well, considering Father's day is almost here. Your words ring so true. Everyday heroes...the ones that are simply there. The ones that don't flake out on their family, their friends and their children. Thank you for the privilege of reading this. It's an awesome piece and I wish you the best of luck in the contest.
